Theateradvies consultant for renovation Felix Meritis

January 15th, 2015

Theateradvies was selected as the theater consultant for the renovation of the Felix Meritis in Amsterdam.

The Felix Meritis will be completely renovated. The monumental building on the Keizersgracht was built in 1788 by a society with the same name, Felix Meritis ("Happy by merit”). The society focused on art, culture and commerce. Exactly a century after it opened, the society was disbanded and the building was used for different ends, including a printing office, the Communist Party’s (CPN) headquarters and finally, a theater. A century after the original society departed, the Felix Meritis Foundation was re-established in the building as the European center of art, culture and science.

After years of inadequate maintenance and some less fortunate architectural renovations, the building is now ready for a thorough renovation in which the monument will be restored to its original glory, both architecturally and programmatically.

Once again, the Felix Meritis will be a cultural center of Amsterdam, with space for its citizens to ponder about the links between art, culture, science and commerce. The starting point for the renovation is the conservation and restoration of the original building with its unique spaces. The aim of the renovation is to modernize the building to be able to make better use of its facilities and spaces.

Theateradvies will advise the Felix Meritis on visitor flows, logistics including goods and food services and will design the theater installations.
