Sneek's very own crown jewel
The old post office in the historic centre of Sneek has been converted into a new theatre. It is located on the route of the Eleven Towns Skating Race [Elfstedentocht] and towers above the city as its crowning glory. The fly loft can be illuminated in different colours, with each colour representing the type of performance taking place that evening.
The auditorium has a particularly intimate ambiance, thanks to its shape and the balconies, which appear to embrace the performers. The architect has specially designed the theatre seating. The large multifunctional auditorium has false proscenium ranging from 11 to 15 metres in width, and an orchestra pit. The auditorium is suitable for all kinds of performances such as theatre, musicals, symphonic music, opera, dance, cabaret and performances for children. The volume and the sound direction can be adjusted using a movable sound reflector.
Various sustainability aspects have been incorporated into the theatre, such as daylight on the stage, in the foyer and in all the staff workrooms. Maximum use has been made of natural ventilation and sustainable materials such as bamboo.
