“Making a lasting impact together”

In large projects, everyone involved approaches the issue from their own expertise and perspective. That is why Steven Houtman, as project manager, first wants to clarify the common goal. "Many expectations only become clear during the production process. My role is to ensure that they are aligned in advance."

Steven’s approach:

Respect everyone's expertise and give them space. First, clarify ideas, wishes, and expectations, because a shared goal inspires enthusiasm and brings people together. Only then should financial and legal frameworks be established.

Steven’s background:

Culture was instilled from an early age. * UvA Political Science and Interfaculty Cultural Management, alongside studies and training, always worked as a theatre technician * * Head of Technical Services and Buildings at De Balie, Zaantheater, Schouwburg Haarlem and Phil, among others * Wandering world traveller ("everything you need fits in a rucksack").

“I thoroughly enjoyed working as head of technology in Haarlem, a rewarding and important position. Nevertheless, in the spring of 2025, I opted for the position of consultant at Theateradvies. Here, I can apply my experience to large projects that will have an impact on the future of theatres. When working in teams, I like to focus on relationships first. What do the team members have in mind and why? This makes everyone involved aware of the common goal. Then you work together to see how best to achieve it.”

“As Head of Technical Production, I was always used to thinking on my feet. You consider the options available in the short term and ensure that the performance can start on time. Eighty percent is often good enough. But as a consultant, I can slow down and think beyond the issues of the day. It's about taking a long-term view to achieve a future result. Then, together with everyone involved, you can aim for one hundred percent.”
